Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Outstanding job by our Armada swimmers at the Round Rock meet this weekend. Again at home, we enjoyed many time improvements and new Invitational qualifiers.

Congratulations to Demi Waworuntu, who broke two records this weekend: a 10 year old record in the 25 free and her own record in the 100 IM. And congratulations also go to the Boys 11-12 medley relay team for breaking the record set earlier this year.

We have a bye (no meet) this weekend. Armada will be participating in the Wells Branch July 4 Festivities with a float in the parade, and coaches in the dunking booth afterward! Come out to Katherine Fleischer Park for all the fun. Kids will be allowed to ride in the float.

The following week, on July 12, is our Divisional Championship meet with Forest North and Balcones Country Club, at our pool. We want ALL swimmers to participate. Please sign up now!

See you on Friday at the park!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Saturday was the end of our dual meet season. Swimmers, you definitely gave it your all. Swimmers, it was so fun to watch you celebrate your time improvements, first time events and finally making that invitational qualifying time. Awesome job!

Monday begins our off week. We are looking forward to having two weeks to prepare, through practice and rest, for the Divisional meet which is the official end to our team’s season. Divisionals is a meet for everybody and we need each swimmer! Each person is an important part of our team and essential to our success. Please let me know if you have any questions about the Divisional meet.

Swimmers, to make the next two weeks interesting, the coaches are planning some new workouts that will be both fun and challenging! We encourage you to keep working hard and to use this off week to your advantage.

A big thank you to my coaches who work so hard each day with all our swimmers and celebrate their accomplishments each Saturday. Thank you parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters for volunteering week after week which makes our meets possible.

Just keep swimming!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered for the Round Rock meet this past weekend!

We have one more meet and that is Divisionals on July 12th. This meet will have 3 shifts for many of the jobs. Pit Parenting will of course be a full meet position as usual.

Please sign up to volunteer at Divisionals if you haven’t already. There are several more positions to fill, and each job is very important.

Thanks to each of you for all the good work that has been done this summer to make this a fabulous swim season for our children!

Meet Set-up
Friday, July 11 at 8:00 pm

Clean Up

We ask everyone to clean up the pit areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. The more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.

WBA Team Awards Ceremony and 2015 Board Election

Sunday, July 13 - 2:00-4:00 pm

Make your plans to attend the annual Wells Branch Armada Awards Ceremony. The big event will be held at the Wells Branch Recreation Center on Shoreline Drive from 2-4 pm on Sunday, July 13.

Each hard-working swimmer on the team has earned an award for being a part of the 2014 WBA Swim Team. Each swimmer will be recognized by name and brought up to the front of the room to receive their award.

We will award "high-point" awards for the top three point-earners in each age group and gender. Swimmers who have set team records will receive an award. Swimmers with perfect attendance at every dual swim meet will receive an award. In addition, the coaches have other awards planned for hard-working swimmers.

Swim-A-Thon prizes will also be awarded, and refreshments will be served.

There are many swimmers and we want each swimmer to be recognized. We ask that you talk to your swimmers ahead of time about the importance of sitting and listening during the ceremony. It does take some time to get through all the awards but each award is important.

Board elections will also be held. A slate of candidates will be presented and additional nominations will be accepted from the floor.

2015 WBA Board

The Wells Branch Armada Board has positions that need to be filled for the 2015 swim season. Anyone willing to put in the time and effort may run for the Board. In an effort to maintain a good balance of interests and strengths among Board members, an independent committee will make recommendations for 2015; however, positions are open and anyone may run.

This year's Board Nomination Committee consists of one non-returning Board member, Nancy Brieger, and two parents that do not serve on the Board, Mary Hale and Kathy Scott. No person that serves on the Board Nomination Committee is eligible to recommend themselves or a family member for the 2015 Board.

If you are interested in finding out more about serving on the Board, please email Marcynda at board@wbarmada.org or Nancy at nebrieger@gmail.com.

End of Season Meets - Reminders

Hi Armada Parents and Swimmers!

High Point Earners
Just a friendly reminder that the Armada has a requirement that anyone receiving the high point award has swum all individual events offered for their age group for which they do not have to "swim up." To qualify, events must be swum at dual meets where points may be earned (ie, not at the Red, White, and Blue meet).

This policy was discussed in detail in an email sent by Marcynda Verdicchio on June 4, 2014.

Divisionals and Invitationals Meets
Please also keep in mind that to swim at our end-of-season Divisionals meet, a swimmer must swim in two dual meets AND have a legal time in each event swum. We really need as many of our swimmers as possible to enter the Divisional meet. Swimmers that are not usually point earners may earn points at Divisionals, as points are awarded for places 1-8.

Also, please remember that it is an Armada team rule that a swimmer who wishes to swim in the Invitational Meet must swim at Divisionals.

We appreciate your cooperation with the above requirements, which we feel emphasize the team nature of this mostly individual team sport.

If you have questions, please contact Marcynda Verdicchio.

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies. Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas. The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Remember to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist Water or sports drinks
Checklist Blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist Nutritious snacks
Checklist Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist Sunblock
Checklist Goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!

Scholarship applications have been turned in, and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Online Meet Entry (OME)

For every swim meet on our schedule, EVERY family MUST login to our website and register your swimmer for the meet. If your swimmer is not able to swim across the pool or you will be out-of-town and cannot participate, you should still login and and complete the form.

Please login to https://wellsbranch.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. You should see the name(s) of your swimmer(s) and the events for their age group(s).

You will be able to tell us if your swimmer(s) will not attend the meet or if they will not be available to swim either the early or the late relays for that meet.

We need each registered swimmer to fill out this form for each meet.
