Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Outstanding job by our Armada swimmers at the Forest North meet this weekend. We defeated the Stingrays in a close one to end our dual meet season with a 4-meet winning streak. This gives us momentum going into the Divisional Championship Meet this Saturday, where we will swim with Forest North again, and Balcones Country Club whom we hosted early in the season. The three teams appear to be very closely matched this year so it should be a very exciting championship meet!

The Invitational Meet at UT is on Sunday after Divisionals for those who have qualifying times. If your swimmer qualifies in a new event at the Divisional meet (in the official posted results), COME FIND ME at the meet and we will get him or her added. I expect this to happen as the adrenaline at Divisionals will be high!

Don't forget to join the Armada for the 4th of July parade Thursday morning. Kids can ride on the float, space permitting, and then there are lots of fun activities at the park that day. See below.

Finally our annual Awards Night will be held on Sunday evening from 6-8 at the Wells Branch recreation center in the gym. See below for more info.

Looking forward to a fun final weekend!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Swimmers and Parents…thank you for a wonderful season. The coaches have truly enjoyed getting to know our swimmers and watching them improve each week. I believe one of the most joyful experiences is seeing swimmers who really overcame some personal challenges whether it was mastery of a stroke, time improvement, confidence in their swimming ability, etc. Also watching them transform from individual swimmers to a team is awesome! I truly hope that you all had a good experience and already have plans of returning next season.

This week is a busy one with 4th of July, Divisionals, Invitationals and Awards night. The coaches are declaring this week Spirit Week. Each day there will be a fun surprise or theme to our practices so we look forward to seeing everyone there. Please do not hesitate to ask your coach if there is something specific you would like to work on. We will be happy to work on those little technical details this week.

Again, parents thank you for letting us work with your children. We look forward to an amazing week of practice!

Coach Gina

Awards Night and 2013 Board Election

Sunday, July 7 - 6:00-8:00 pm

Make your plans to attend the annual Wells Branch Armada Awards Night. The big event will be held at the Wells Branch Recreation Center on Shoreline Drive from 6-8 pm on Sunday, July 7.

Each hard-working swimmer on the team has earned an award for being a part of the 2013 WBA Swim Team. Each swimmer will be recognized by name and brought up to the front of the room to receive their award.

We will award "high-point" awards for the top three point-earners in each age group and each gender. Swimmers who have set team records will receive an award. Swimmers with perfect attendance at every dual swim meet will receive an award. In addition, the coaches have other awards planned for hard-working swimmers.

Swim-A-Thon prizes will also be awarded.

There will be refreshments and a DVD presentation of the season.

There are many swimmers and we want each swimmer to be recognized. We ask that you talk to your swimmers ahead of time about the importance of sitting and listening during the ceremony. It does take some time to get through all the awards but each award is important.

Board elections will also be held. A slate of candidates will be presented and additional nominations will be accepted from the floor.

Practice Schedule

One more week of morning practices...hard to believe the season is almost over!

Although morning practices have been in session for a few weeks, we may still make changes to this schedule or shuffle swimmers in the lanes if we have too many swimmers in the pool/lane at one time. Our goal is to make each practice as even as possible so the swimmers have the best experience possible.

If you have any questions please contact Marcynda Verdicchio.

Practice Schedule: June 5 - July 5 -- Monday-Friday

Practice 1: Ages 12 & Up 7:15 - 8:45 AM
Practice 2: Ages 6 and Under 8:45 - 9:30 AM
Practice 3: Ages 7-8 9:30 - 10:30 AM
Practice 4: Ages 9-11 10:30 - 11:30 AM

Rain/Bad Weather:

In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as, fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies.Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist 2 towels Checklist water or sport's drinks
Checklist blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist nutritious snacks
Checklist warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist sunblock
Checklist goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!
