Captain's Log

By: Marcynda Verdicchio

Hello everyone, congratulations on another outstanding meet! Our team showed lots of time improvements, produced more Invitationals qualifiers, and broke more records.

The season has flown by, as it always does, and our last dual meet of the season is this Saturday, at home, against the Round Rock Dolphins. The following Saturday, July 9, we host the Division 4 Championship meet and then off to Invitationals on Sun, July 10 for those that qualified.

I look forward to Monday's family swim team night at the Round Rock Express and to seeing many of you there.

Also, be sure to remember Coach Appreciation Day, Spirit Day and the Awards Ceremony all happening next week. See below for more information.

Coach's Corner

By: Gina Zayas

Here we are in the final stretch of our 2016 season. These final two weeks will be awesome and filled with a lot of swimming and team events! I’d like to begin by thanking everyone who came out for the meet this weekend when we traveled to Block House Creek. We had an amazing turnout which led to many fantastic swims including one swimmer’s first meet, huge time drops and a lot of exciting finishes on many races. Swimmers, you all have accomplished so much over the past 8 weeks! Please take time to look back at what you’ve learned, improved on and the goals you’ve met. As your coaches and parents watch from the side of the pool we cannot be more proud of you and the awesome swimmers and friends you are. We are so fortunate to look back not only at this past season but, for the entire time we’ve known you and see all you’ve done and then look forward to all you will do. This season has proved once again that the Armada is more than just a swim team. We are friends and family that help, support and cheer for one another from the sidelines. In this Olympic year we are reminded that everyone began somewhere and the following link is a fun video of the Olympic swimmers we all know in their early swim days when they fell in love with the sport of swimming.

As for our meet coming up this weekend we will be back at home hosting one of our favorite teams, the Round Rock Dolphins. I am looking forward to seeing all of our swimmers ready to swim their best this week as we prepare and as always please feel free to email or ask myself or your child’s coach any questions you may have.

We will have a great week!

Coach Gina

Volunteer Spot

By: Wesley Freeman

Wow! The season has gone quick. Block House Creek was our first and only true “away” meet (i.e. we went somewhere other than our Willowbend Pool). Many thanks go out to all the volunteers for making it extremely smooth. The tents were picked-up and distributed Saturday morning on-time. Pit Parents were in place; timers, judges, and ready bench personnel were a “fully functional battlestation” (Language from the 1980’s TV series Battlestar Galalctica).

Next week is our last standard meet for the season. We are home hosting the Round Rock Dolphins. We are also back to the standard quantity of positions needing to be filled. Including shifts and the different jobs, these type meets have approximately 100 positions needing to be filled. For the Round Rock meet, y’all have done a great job filling the positions. We are still short though two people on 2nd Shift Ready Bench and three positions for Pits Parents (2 for 11-12 boys and 1 for 13-14 girls).

Divisionals is going to be opening up this week. Please pay attention to the jobs because many will have three shifts and some will have shifts omitted. Three shifts were added on some of the positions to help spread the task across the different teams and their resource base. Shifts were omitted to enable all four teams to contribute to the labor pool. Some of the positions will also have a smaller number of volunteer positions such as Ready Bench and Timers. More teams means more resources to divide the labor across.

Concessions will have three slots for sign-up at Divisionals. Two of the slots will be for Snow Cones and one slot for ensuring the water buckets, staged at the pool corners, are maintained with bottled water and ice.

Have a great week and we will see you Saturday.

RR Express Night - Monday, June 27

Monday, June 27, 2016 the RR Express will take on the Colorado Springs Skysox and will begin at 7:05pm. Also, this is dollar hot dog and soda night – Wahoo!

The gates open at 5:30 pm. By 6:00 pm we need to be gathered under the Jumbo-tron to be escorted down for the parade. For those of you who have never walked around a baseball field, it's larger than you think and will give you a new perspective on the vast area that the players cover during a game. Parents are welcome to walk with their swimmers but do not have to. Coaches and Board Members will be walking with the team. Be sure to wear your Armada shirts!

Stroke Clinics

As we begin the last 2 weeks of the season we know that many of you have swimmers close to qualifying for the Invitational meet. In order to help in the best way we can outside of our normal practices we are going to offer stroke clinics Tuesday through Friday this week and next week. Clinics will be similar to what we’ve had with a few differences listed below:

  1. Stroke clinics will not be assigned to a specific skill. Instead, when you sign up you will write what stroke/turn/dive skill you would like help with.
  2. There will be ten spots open at each of the normal clinic times (12-12:30 1st session and 12:30-1pm 2nd session) and sign ups are first come, first serve.
  3. We will have coaches available so that the swimmers are working in groups with those of similar age or skill level.

Please email or stop me at the pool with any questions.  Thanks!

Coach Gina

Schlotzsky's Spirit Night Update

Thank you to everyone who participated in our “SPIRIT DAY” at Schlotzsky’s! Based on our sales of $860.75, we earned a total of $172.15 for our team and a few of us didn’t have to cook that day/night. Win – win for all involved.

The Armada board would like to thank you again for your support and a huge thank you to Schlotzsky’s for giving us the opportunity. The managers on duty that day reported that our swimmers and families were a joy to work with! They also described how patient and polite everyone was and look forward to working with our “fun team” in the future!

Complete details will be in next week's newsletter, but we would like as many people as possible to attend this meet. Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies.Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist 2 towels Checklist Water or sport's drinks
Checklist Blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist Nutritious snacks
Checklist Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist Sunblock
Checklist Goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!
