Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Hello everyone, congratulations on another outstanding meet! Being back at home this week after a long stretch of away meets was refreshing. Our team showed lots of time improvements, produced more Invitationals qualifiers, and defeated the Hurricanes.

The season has flown by, as it always does, and our last dual meet of the season is this Saturday, at home, against the Round Rock Dolphins. Then we have a week off for the July 4th holiday, and then we host Divisionals on July 12.

I look forward to Monday's family swim team night at the Round Rock Express and to seeing many of you there.

Also, be sure to remember Coach Appreciation Day this coming Thursday, June 26.  See below for more information.

Finally, there is information below regarding Swim-A-Thon payments (due June 30), raffles, and awards night, among other things.  Please be sure to read through the information below about upcoming events.

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Spectacular…awesome…exceptional…amazing…outstanding…the list could go on and on.  We had a fantastic meet this past weekend when we swam the Hurricanes at home!  There were 252 time improvements and several invitational qualifiers!  We watched a group of 6&under swimmers that swam beautifully for the first time in a meet.  Each age group had swimmers trying events for the first time and finishing with flying colors.  Above all, the coaches were impressed by the spirit of our team.  Swimmers, we are so proud of you.

It is hard to believe we are approaching the end of our season.  This weekend is our final dual meet.  We are swimming Round Rock Dolphins at home.  Swimmers, after this next meet we have two good weeks of practice before our divisional meet.  This is the time to pay attention and work on those little details of your stroke which will help you get those time improvements you work so hard for.  The coaches are happy to customize our practices in order to give you more practice.  Please let us know what we can do for you.

This week will focus very much on technique and speed.  We will work on the little details that will help with our last two opportunities for time improvement and qualifying for Invitationals.  Please remember that everyone can swim Divisionals.  Divisionals does not require a qualifying time.  However, you must have swum in two official dual meets and have a legal time in the events you are swimming.  If you have any questions please feel free to stop me at the pool or email me.

Parents, thank you for all your support and allowing the coaches the opportunity to work with your children.  We have all enjoyed getting to know them!  Let’s work hard and have an awesome week!

Meet Set-up
Friday, June 27 at 8:00 pm

Meet setup will start at 8:00 pm for this meet. We must move all tables and chairs and put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.

The morning of the meet, we need help setting up pop-up tents around the pool. We appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.

Clean Up

We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. The more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.

Parking

At a home meet, Armada families park in the unpaved lot across the street from the pool, leaving the lot adjacent to the pool for our guest team. Please follow instructions from the parking attendants for everyone's safety. Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street.

Please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.

July 12 - Divisional Meet - Home

At our final open meet of the season on July 12, we play host to our Division III rivals Balcones Country Club and Forest North. Details will be in next week's newsletter, but we would like as many people as possible to attend this meet. The old adage that every swimmer matters to the team is more true than ever at Divisionals, where depth matters even more than at a dual meet. Online Meet Entry for this meet is now open, so you can sign your swimmers up and register for volunteer jobs now.

July 20 - Invitataional Meet - UT Swim Center

The Invitational meet is July 20 for swimmers who have swum a qualifying time. Details will be in the upcoming newsletters, but many swimmers will swim their fastest time at Divisionals, and many that had not previously achieved the Invitational time standards may achieve them, so please leave room in your schedule for this meet. More information to come in upcoming communications.

End of Season Meets - Reminders

Hi Armada Parents and Swimmers!

High Point Earners
Just a friendly reminder that the Armada has a requirement that anyone receiving the high point award has swum all individual events offered for their age group for which they do not have to "swim up." To qualify, events must be swum at dual meets where points may be earned (ie, not at the Red, White, and Blue meet).

This policy was discussed in detail in an email sent by Marcynda Verdicchio on June 4, 2014.

Divisionals and Invitationals Meets
Please also keep in mind that to swim at our end-of-season Divisionals meet, a swimmer must swim in two dual meets AND have a legal time in each event swum. We really need as many of our swimmers as possible to enter the Divisional meet. Swimmers that are not usually point earners may earn points at Divisionals, as points are awarded for places 1-8.

Also, please remember that it is an Armada team rule that a swimmer who wishes to swim in the Invitational Meet must swim at Divisionals.

We appreciate your cooperation with the above requirements, which we feel emphasize the team nature of this mostly individual team sport.

If you have questions, please contact Marcynda Verdicchio.

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:
tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies. Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas. The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Remember to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist Water or sports drinks
Checklist Blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist Nutritious snacks
Checklist Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist Sunblock
Checklist Goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!
