Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Hello everyone, congratulations on another outstanding meet. Traveling to Block House Creek, our team showed lots of time improvements, broke some records, produced more Invitationals qualifiers, and defeated the Tidal Waves. Our record improves to 3-2 as we look to our last dual meet of the season, with Forest North this Saturday. The season always does seem to fly by, doesn't it!

This meet with Forest North will be a bit different. The Sting Rays do not have a "home" pool, so they swim their home meets at other teams' pools. That will be the case this Saturday, when, although the meet will be held at our own Willow Bend pool, Forest North will provide the home meet volunteers (eg starter, announcer), run the concessions and swim shop, and as much as possible take the role of home team. We will still have our pits inside the pool though, and theirs will still be outside near the playscape.

Please help make the Sting Rays feel at "home" this Saturday as much as we can. They are a great part of the Northwest Swim Circuit and we are very much looking forward to seeing them again this weekend.

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Spectacular…awesome…exceptional…amazing…outstanding…the list could go on and on. We had a fantastic meet this past weekend when we traveled to Block House Creek! There were 175 time improvements and several invitational qualifiers not to mention all of you swimmers that tried new events and did a great job.

It is hard to believe we are only two weeks away from the end of our season. I am sad to see the end but I have enjoyed seeing our swimmers improve each week and make new friends, and working with an awesome coaching staff and swim board. This team has done unbelievably well and I am so happy to see the swimmers putting so much effort into their practices and races at the meets. These next couple weeks are full of practice and fun swim team events such as our final dual meet against Forest North, the 4th of July parade, Divisionals, Invitationals, and Awards. Tired yet? J

This week will focus very much on technique and speed. We will work on the little details that will help with our last two opportunities for time improvement and qualifying for Invitationals. Please remember that everyone can swim Divisionals. Divisionals does not require a qualifying time. However, you must have swum in two official dual meets and have a legal time in the events you are swimming. If you have any questions please feel free to stop me at the pool or email me.

Parents, thank you for all your support and allowing the coaches the opportunity to work with your children. We have all enjoyed getting to know them! Let’s work hard and have an awesome meet!

Coach Gina

Forest North Meet (June 29) - Away at Home

Be sure to enter by noon Monday - June 24 using our OME system.

For our last dual meet we will "travel" back home, where the Forest North Stingrays will play host to us. Forest North is a Division rival and a great preview for Divisionals the next weekend, so hope to see everyone there!

As always, please remember that relays are chosen by the coaches and we try to have as many swimmers as possible participate. Please recognize that if a swimmer signs up for a meet and then does not participate on Saturday, it may result in our having to scratch that swimmer's entire relay team from the meet.

Please arrive on time. Late arrival could result in your swimmer being scratched from their relay.

Scratch: Once we close the meet online, email paul.wadehra@gmail.com, or text to 512-659-1373 if you have to scratch.

Meet Set-up
Friday, June 28 at 8:20 pm
Meet setup will start at

8:20 pm

Forest North is taking care of setup for this meet, since they are the host, so we'll need a smaller crew than usual to supervise their volunteers. However, the same things need to be completed as are done for a home meet: move all tables and chairs, put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.

The morning of the meet, please don't hesitate to lend a hand setting up tents as usual; it will help the meet go more smoothly for everyone and we appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.

Clean Up
We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave (our pits will remain inside the pool area, as usual for a home meet). We must return the pool area to its original condition. The more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.

Parking

Please follow instructions from the parking attendants for everyone's safety. Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street.
Please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.

Practice Schedule

Morning practices are in full swim!

Although morning practices have been in session for a few weeks, we may still make changes to this schedule or shuffle swimmers in the lanes if we have too many swimmers in the pool/lane at one time. Our goal is to make each practice as even as possible so the swimmers have the best experience possible.

If you have any questions please contact Marcynda Verdicchio.

Practice Schedule: June 5 - July 5 -- Monday-Friday
Practice 1: Ages 12 & Up 7:15 - 8:45 AM
Practice 2: Ages 6 and Under 8:45 - 9:30 AM
Practice 3: Ages 7-8 9:30 - 10:30 AM
Practice 4: Ages 9-11 10:30 - 11:30 AM

Rain/Bad Weather:

In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as, fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies.Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist water or sport's drinks
Checklist blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist nutritious snacks
Checklist warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist sunblock
