“Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.”
Can you believe we are already halfway through our swim season?! The days of practice and Saturday meets are flying by! This past Saturday our team faced the Balcones Sharks and did amazing! The following are words of praise from the coaches on what really stood out to them this meet:
- Swimmers challenging themselves to swim events for the first time this weekend.
- The awesome number of time improvements from the youngest swimmers on our team all the way up to our oldest.
- Fantastic team spirit and heartfelt support the swimmers gave to each other.
- Swimmers listening and asking for feedback after their swims.
Swimmers, thank you for giving it your all and continuing to work hard. Parents, thank you for supporting your kids and making the commitment to bring them to practice and volunteer at the meets. Amazing things happen when we work together. :)
We will swim the Hurricanes this week at home. Our practice plan for this week will focus on the following skills:
- Strong starts and finishes.
- Stroke technique with an emphasis on butterfly and breaststroke.
- Controlled breathing.
- Relay starts and finishes.
- The difference between sprinting and practice pace.
This is going to be a great week! See you at practice. :)

Believe it or not we just finished our fourth meet. We are half way through the season. It’s a reason to cheer and be somber. I appreciate everyone volunteering and helping keep the meets progressing. Several families stepped up fill to the gaps on Saturday either permanently or on a temporary basis.
Next week is the meet with Rattan Creek. As of Sunday morning, our Pit Parent crew has five vacancies and Ready Bench has three vacancies on second shift. If you have a spare person in your family or some time, put them in there or jump in yourself respectively.
As a reminder to everyone, please be on time for your activities. First shift personnel, whose jobs start when the meet starts (7:30 am), should be in place no later than 7:00. Second shift personnel need to be checking in around event #42, prior to the Parent/Coach relays.
The actual time second shift starts can change from meet to meet. It depends on the quantity of swimmers, if there have been any unforeseen delays, etc. The meet software puts estimated times on the heat sheets. However, this is an estimated time only. Usually the meet coordination team is progressing the meet faster than the heat sheets.
If you go off-site, use Meet Bop to monitor the progression of the meet. I downloaded the “app” prior to the Balcones Country Club meet onto my phone for free. This app allows you to monitor the progression of the meet and it tells you if the meet is running early, late, or on-time.
Hang in there!
Rattan Creek Hurricanes - June 18 (Home)
Our next meet is at home against the Rattan Creek Hurricanes. Please arrive on time. Late arrival could result in your swimmer being scratched from their relay.

Swim-a-thon: Tues, June 14
Our annual Swim-A-Thon will be held on this Tuesday, June 14. This is our primary FUNdraiser, with emphasis on the "fun," and the funds raised help us to keep our fees low and help us to purchase needed equipment.
Swimmers received a donation envelope in their family folder this past week. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. As part of registration, each family has committed to get donations of at least $50. (There was an option to pay this online at registration, which many families did; up-front payment of the Swim-A-Thon fee covers your minimum obligation but does not prevent you from further participation in fundraising and prizes if you would like. If you are unsure if you have paid, please contact Mike Zayas.)
Please refer to the Swim-A-Thon letter for specific information regarding prizes awarded.
During the Swim-A-Thon, swimmers will be swimming laps and parents will bring chairs and sit pool side to count their swimmers' laps. Each team member will be entered in drawings for great door prizes! We will also kick off our raffle (see below), and provide free food and drinks for all family members! Due to insurance coverage, only Armada swimmers are allowed in the pool during Swim-A-Thon.
Finally, Swim-A-Thon is when we kick off our Raffle (drawings will happen and winners will be announced at Awards Night). Tickets are $2.00 each or 6 for $10.00 with the exception of the raffle for a 2017 Armada Registration. Raffle tickets for the registration will be $5.00 a piece.
Look for raffle items this year from: Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts, Thirty-One Gifts, Wells Branch Armada, Round Rock Express, Cinemark, Spare Time, Schlotzsky’s, Pluckers, Outlaw Paintball, Urban Air, Gino’s Italian Restaurant (in Round Rock), Vida Green, Mary Kay and doTERRA Essential Oils!
Thank you, and look forward to seeing you there!
Coach Zack's Challenge...
We are well on our way to seeing Coach Zack with a buzz cut. This weekend we raised an amazing $278.00. We will continue collecting monies at both practices on Monday and Tuesday and announce the final tally at the Swim-A-Thon Tuesday night. If you want to help cut Zack’s hair, you need to go out and swim, swim, swim Tuesday evening.
Change, Cash and Checks made out to “The American Cancer Society” accepted!
The top lap swimmer from each age bracket will get to help shave his hair at the end of the evening.

June 25 meet - Away vs Block House Creek

RR Express Night - June 27
Monday, June 27, 2016 the RR Express will take on the Colorado Springs Skysox and will begin at 7:05pm
This is dollar hot dog and soda night – Wahoo!
If you missed your chance to order ticket thru Armada, you can still go! You may also purchase your tickets online directly from RR Express at http://rrexpress.com
For our new families, the June 27th Express game is Swim Team Night. All of the summer swim teams are invited and we get to parade around the baseball stadium before the game. The gates open at 5:30 pm. By 6:00 pm we need to be gathered under the Jumbo-tron to be escorted down for the parade. For those of you who have never walked around a baseball field, it's larger than you think and will give you a new perspective on the vast area that the players cover during a game. Parents are welcome to walk with their swimmers but do not have to. Coaches and Board Members will be walking with the team. Be sure to wear your Armada shirts!
End of Season Meets - Reminders
Hi Armada Parents and Swimmers!
High Point Earners
Just a friendly reminder that the Armada has a requirement that anyone receiving the high point award has swum all individual events offered for their age group for which they do not have to "swim up." To qualify, events must be swum at dual meets where points may be earned (ie, not at the Red, White, and Blue meet, nor at Divisionals). Please note that the swimmer must have attempted the event in a dual meet, but need not have obtained a legal time (so if DQ'd, that counts as their attempt). Also, events entered at the rained out meet also count as their attempt, provided the swimmer is listed on the official attendance report. .
This policy is discussed in detail in this FAQ.
Divisionals and Invitationals Meets
Please also keep in mind that to swim at our end-of-season Divisional meet, a swimmer must swim in two dual meets AND have a legal time in each event they enter at this meet. We really need as many of our swimmers as possible to enter the Divisional meet. Swimmers that are not usually point earners may earn points at the Divisional meet, as points are awarded for places 1-8.
Also, please remember that it is an Armada team rule that a swimmer who wishes to swim in the Invitational Meet must swim at the Divisional meet.
We appreciate your cooperation with the above requirements, which we feel emphasize the team nature of this mostly individual team sport.
Swim Meet Tips and Checklist
Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:
|Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.|
|Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.|
|Pack appropriate supplies. Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...|
|Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.|
|MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!|
|2 towels||Water or sport's drinks|
|Blanket to sit on in pit area||Nutritious snacks|
|Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m.||Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races|
|Goggles||Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!|
