Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Our Armada swimmers came ready to swim at the away meet with Steiner Ranch on Saturday. It was a very pleasant morning for a meet and the meet ran very smoothly. This week, we conclude our road trips for the season by visiting the Balcones Country Club Sharks on Saturday.

Congratulations to Andrew Taffinder for breaking the Boys 11-12 IM record this week! Congratulations also to the Boys 11-12 medley relay team, and the Boys 11-12 freestyle relay team, for breaking the records in those events! See below for details.

Swim-A-Thon is this Tuesday at 6:00 pm at the Willow Bend Pool. See below for details, and we do need volunteers!

Please remember that, even if you are not planning to attend a particular meet, you need to still go in and register with the tool indicating that. This saves us a lot of time and effort when preparing for the meet.

Finally, if you are planning to attend Swim Team Night with the Round Rock Express, please get your orders turned in to Anne Bennett or placed in the Board box at the pool as soon as possible, or by Friday, June 13 (this week) at the latest.

Thanks, and I'll see you at the pool!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Our meet this past Saturday against Steiner Ranch was such a true testament to the hard work being put forth by our swimmers and coaches. This was evident by our 156 time improvements!  Way to go swimmers!  We are so proud of you!

A few Wonderful, Bold and Amazing moments this weekend:

  • Carra Johnson, our only 6&under girl attending the meet, swam with the 9&10 girls medley relay to avoid having to scratch.  Thanks Carra!
  • Several first swims and broken records!
  • 46% Time Improvements!
  • Exciting relays!

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through our swim season.  Swimmers, I know many of you are so close to qualifying for the Invitational swim meet.  Please let the coaches know if you have something special you’d like to work on.  A lot of the time cutting those last few seconds off your time requires fine tuning the details of your swim, start, finish, turn, etc.  We will be glad to help.  I also encourage you to challenge yourself and sign up for a new event for our meet against Balcones next week. Competing in new events allows you to really grow as a swimmer.

Stroke Clinics have started and will be going through the rest of the season.  The stroke clinic notebook is by the family folders and inside you will find a schedule for the clinics being held that week as well as the sign-up sheets.  The schedule for the next week will be put out on Fridays.

Swimmers, you all are doing excellent!  Stay focused this week during practice and be sure to ask your coach about anything you have questions on or if there are strokes you need help with.  That is what we are there for.

End of Season Meets - Reminders

Hi Armada Parents and Swimmers!

High Point Earners
Just a friendly reminder that the Armada has a requirement that anyone receiving the high point award has swum all individual events offered for their age group for which they do not have to "swim up." To qualify, events must be swum at dual meets where points may be earned (ie, not at the Red, White, and Blue meet).

This policy was discussed in detail in an email sent by Marcynda Verdicchio on June 4, 2014.

Divisionals and Invitationals Meets
Please also keep in mind that to swim at our end-of-season Divisionals meet, a swimmer must swim in two dual meets AND have a legal time in each event swum. We really need as many of our swimmers as possible to enter the Divisional meet. Swimmers that are not usually point earners may earn points at Divisionals, as points are awarded for places 1-8.

Also, please remember that it is an Armada team rule that a swimmer who wishes to swim in the Invitational Meet must swim at Divisionals.

We appreciate your cooperation with the above requirements, which we feel emphasize the team nature of this mostly individual team sport.

If you have questions, please contact Marcynda Verdicchio.

WBA Board Nomination Committee - Volunteers Needed

The Wells Branch Armada Board has positions that need to be filled for the 2015 swim season. Anyone willing to put in the time and effort may run for the Board. In an effort to maintain a good balance of interests and strengths among Board members, an independent committee will make recommendations for 2015; however, positions are open and anyone may run.

The Board Nomination Committee will consist of one current or non-returning Board member and two other parents that do not serve on the Board. No person that serves on the Board Nomination Committee is eligible to recommend themselves or a family member for the 2015 Board. If you would like to serve on the committee, please email board@wbarmada.org.

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies. Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas. The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Remember to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist Water or sports drinks
Checklist Blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist Nutritious snacks
Checklist Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist Sunblock
Checklist Goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!

Online Meet Entry (OME)

For every swim meet on our schedule, EVERY family MUST login to our website and register your swimmer for the meet. If your swimmer is not able to swim across the pool or you will be out-of-town and cannot participate, you should still login and and complete the form.

Please login to https://wellsbranch.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. You should see the name(s) of your swimmer(s) and the events for their age group(s).

You will be able to tell us if your swimmer(s) will not attend the meet or if they will not be available to swim either the early or the late relays for that meet.

We need each registered swimmer to fill out this form for each meet.
