Captain's Log

Our Armada swimmers certainly came ready to swim at the home meet with Cedar Park on Saturday. Our team had a whopping 215 time improvements in defeating the Typhoons. This improves our dual meet record to 1-2 as we look forward to facing our first divisional opponent of the season, the Balcones Country Club Sharks on Saturday.

Another 20-year old Armada record fell as Vincent Liew set a new mark in the Boys 9-10 100 IM with a time of 1:22.94, almost a second faster than the previous record. But Vincent wasn't finished, setting a new record in the 25 Fly as well, with a time of 15.61. And finally, the Boys 9-10 Freestyle Relay team of Keegan Gavin, Ephraim Freeman, Vincent Liew, and Jake Tolfa set a new record of 1:01.07. Congrats to this week's record breakers!

Please remember that, even if you are not planning to attend a particular meet, you need to still go in and register with the tool indicating that. This saves us a lot of time and effort when preparing for the meet.

Coach's Corner

Our meet this past Saturday against Cedar Park was such a true testament to the hard work being put forth by our swimmers and coaches.  This was evident by our many Invitational Qualifiers as well as the 215 time improvements!  Way to go!

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through our swim season!  With that being said I would like to remind parents and swimmers of a few things.  In order to swim in the Divisional swim meet, which we expect whole team participation in, a swimmer has to have participated in at least two dual meets, and has to have a legal time for each event they want to swim.  Also, we expect each swimmer to have swum each event at least once during the season.  Swimmers, I encourage you to challenge yourself and sign up for new events for our meets against Balcones and Tidal Waves.  Please talk to your coach about helping you prepare for a race you’ve never done.  We would all be more than happy to work with you.

This week we will begin our goal charts.  Goal setting is important for the following reasons:

  • Purpose. Having a strong sense of purpose boosts self-belief and can improve confidence. It is something meaningful and worthwhile to aim for.
  • Focus. Having a goal in life helps us make better decisions.
  • Motivation. It gives us motivation in life. Because goals are meaningful and personal we want to achieve them. Having goals in life gives us motivation and the energy to keep going.

As age groups we are going to keep track of goals met each week.  On Fridays we will be asking the swimmers for one goal they would like to accomplish at the meet and on Monday we will fill in our stars for each goal met.  The last week of practice the number of goals accomplished for each age group will be totaled up and the age group with the most will be given a prize to be announced later.  I will also leave out large index cards by the boxes for those swimmers who would like to keep track of their individual goals. 

Stroke Clinics have started and will be going through the rest of the season.  The stroke clinic notebook is by the family folders and inside you will find a schedule for the clinics being held that week as well as the sign-up sheets.  The schedule for the next week will be put out on Fridays.  If you have any questions please see Coach Don. 

Swimmers, you all are doing excellent!  Stay focused this week during practice and be sure to ask your coach about anything you have questions on or if there are strokes you need help with.  That is what we are there for. J

Balcones Country Club Meet (June 15) - Home

Be sure to enter by noon Monday - June 10 using our OME system.

Our fourth dual meet is at home again versus Balcones Country Club. This is one of our last two home meets prior to Divisionals and Invitationals, so hope to see as many as possible signed up to swim!

Relays are chosen by the coaches and we try to have as many swimmers as possible participate. Please recognize that if a swimmer signs up for a meet and then does not participate on Saturday, it may result in our having to scratch that swimmer's entire relay team from the meet.

Please arrive on time. Late arrival could result in your swimmer being scratched from their relay.

Meet Set-up
Friday, June 14 at 8:00 pm
Meet setup will start at 8:00 pm for this meet. As always, we must move all tables and chairs and put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.
 
The morning of the meet, we need help setting up pop-up tents around the pool. We appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.
 
Clean Up
We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. The more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.
 
Parking

At a home meet, Armada families park in the unpaved lot across the street from the pool, leaving the lot adjacent to the pool for our guest team. Please follow instructions from the parking attendants for everyone's safety. Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street.
Please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.

* Concession Stand Donations:
We ask that parents make a donation of homemade baked goods or cut-up fruit to the concession stand for sale during our home swim meets. Some ideas are muffins, cookies, and fruit that is cut up and placed in containers such as plastic cups with clear wrap on top. Please remember it will be hot outside and you don't want to donate anything that will melt - like chocolate chips, frosting, etc.

Fast Fishy Winners

Each week the WBA honors the swimmers in each age group that record the largest time improvement. In swimming, the goal is to try to beat yourself each week by recording a personal best.

These swimmers will receive a special "Fast Fishy" cap from the coaches.

Invitational Meet Qualifiers

Swim Team Night at RR Express, June 10

Please join us for swim team night at Dell Diamond where the Round Rock Express will take on the Albuquerque Isotopes.  RR Express tickets have been put in your family file if you ordered them for Monday's game. Be sure to wear your Armada t-shirts! 

The gates open at 5:30 pm and the swimmers need to be gathered under the jumbotron, next to Home Run Porch, by 6 pm.  We can take pictures on the grass while we wait. At 6 pm we'll be taken down to the field for the parade.

It is also $1 hot dog and $1 soda night.

Invitational/Divisional T-Shirts

Invitational/Divisional shirts are available for order!  Please see the swim shop during our home swim meets to take a look at the 2013 Invitational/Divisional shirt design and to get an idea of sizing.  Forms to order the shirts were placed in the family folder box.  If you have lost your form there are extras in the family folder box.  Orders must be submitted by Thursday June 13, 2013.  There will be a folder in the family file box where completed order forms with payment can be returned.  These shirts can be ordered by anyone whether you plan on attending Invitationals or Divisionals.  If you have any questions, please contact Charles Yang at Charles.yang@mckesson.com or 512-992-6200.

Swim-A-Thon - Donations Needed for Silent Auction

Our annual Swim-a-thon & Silent Auction will be held Tuesday, June 18. This is our primary fundraiser for the year and the funds raised help us keep our registration fees low and help us purchase needed equipment.

We are asking for donations of goods or services or gift certificates that we can auction off during the event. We are a registered 501c3 non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible.

Swim-A-Thon - Party Time is 6:00-8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Our annual Swim-A-Thon & Silent Auction will be held from 6 to 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 18. This is our primary fundraiser and a huge party for our swimmers and families!

Swimmers received donation envelopes in their family folders last week. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. This fundraiser keeps us from having to raise registration prices significantly. Each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

During the Swim-A-Thon, swimmers will be swimming laps and parents will bring chairs and sit by the pool to count your swimmer's laps. Only team members are allowed in the pool. Each team member will be entered in drawings for great door prizes - and there is one for everyone!. We will also have special prizes you can purchase raffle tickets for.

We will offer free food and drinks for all family members. Sno-cones, popcorn, hot dogs and we usually are able to offer some "higher-end" food also. No charge for any of this!

Parents are encouraged to visit our Silent Auction tables. We have restaurant certificates, tickets to local attractions, and items donated by local businesses - great for gifts or just to treat yourself!

Volunteers are also needed for Swim-A-Thon, to help with sign-in, running the sno-cone and popcorn machines, etc.  Please contact Anne Bennett at bennean7@gmail.com or 281-804-7778 (text is fine) if you are able to help out.

Practice Schedule

Please remember that morning practices began last week.  

We may make changes to this schedule after practice starts if we have too many swimmers in the pool at one time. Our goal is to make each practice as even as possible so the swimmers have the best experience possible.

Practice 1: Ages 12 & Up 7:15 - 8:45 AM
Practice 2: Ages 6 and Under 8:45 - 9:30 AM
Practice 3: Ages 7-8 9:30 - 10:30 AM
Practice 4: Ages 9-11 10:30 - 11:30 AM

Rain/Bad Weather:

In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

WBA Scholarships

The Wells Branch Armada offers up to three annual scholarships to swimmers who apply in their "age-out" year.

A scholarship committee will review applications. No senior parent will serve on the committee and we would like non-board members to volunteer. If you would like to serve on the committee, please email board@wbarmada.org

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as, fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies.Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Online Meet Entry (OME)

For every swim meet on our schedule, EVERY family MUST login to our website and register your swimmer for the meet. If your swimmer is not able to swim across the pool or you will be out-of-town and cannot participate, you should still login and and complete the form.

Please login to https://wellsbranch.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. You should see the name(s) of your swimmer(s) and the events for their age group(s).

You will be able to tell us if your swimmer(s) will not attend the meet or if they will not be available to swim either the early or the late relays for that meet.

We need each registered swimmer to fill out this form for each meet.
