Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Hi Parents & Swimmers,

Great job against our divisional opponent at Forest North this weekend. We will see them again in our Divisional Meet at the end of the season.

We had a number of improvements - those red, white, and blue ribbons will be in folders this week. We also had new Invitational Qualifiers and 1st place winners (see below).

We go back on the road this week - to visit the Steiner Ranch Blue Stars. Be sure to sign in by noon Monday and let us know if you are participating and your event and volunteer choices. Arrival time is 6:25 am. See below in this newsletter for more details.

Also remember that morning practices start this Friday, June 6.  See below for practice schedule.

We are gearing up for our annual Swim-A-Thon fundraiser. Read more below.

See you at the pool!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Hi Armada Swimmers and Parents!

I want to begin with praises for our swimmers who swam in our first away meet against Forest North.  Traveling to other pools is always a good challenge and exercise in adaptation for our swimmers.  Despite all the physical differences of the pool, our swimmers gave amazing effort in all of their events.  Several of you swam new events and you should be so proud of yourself for that.

Several swimmers set a great example of being a team player when they stayed poolside after their race to cheer on their teammates and give high fives or swam in a relay for a different age group so we wouldn’t have to scratch.  Swimmers, one of my most favorite things about this team is seeing the incredible friendships that form over the matter of just a few weeks.  Thank you for the outstanding performance!

We travel again this week to Steiner Ranch Stars.  We will be focusing on speed work, turns, and more stroke technique this week.  Swimmers, please let the coaches know of any specific goals or questions you have.  We are here to help you and love hearing from you!

Our goals for practice this week are as follows:

  • Speed Work and Breath Control
  • Backstroke Stroke Counts and Finishes
  • Starts
  • Technical Parts of Breaststroke and Butterfly

It is going to be a great week!

Please remember that we transition from afternoon practices to morning practices on Friday.

And finally, a little trivia for you:

Did you know….?

*Benjamin Franklin invented swim fins.

*The oldest form of stroke used is the breaststroke.

*The Deep Eddy Swimming Pool, built in 1915, is the oldest known concrete swimming pool and was built in Texas.

Volunteer Spot

by Nancy Brieger, Volunteer Coordinator

Thank you parents for all the hard work & flexibility at the meet on Saturday! We had a number of swimmers out sick and had to juggle several volunteer positions that were suddenly unfilled. Many of you stepped up to do double duty, were willing to switch positions, and were willing to learn new positions. Thank you so very much. Thank you also to all those who assisted in putting up and taking down the tents and cleaning up our area at the meet.

We have another away meet coming up and we will again need lots of help. Please make sure that your family is signing up to help and meeting the team’s requirement for volunteer service. Even if the system tells you all volunteer positions are filled, you must contact me to see how you can meet the volunteer requirement. If you receive an email from me requesting you to fill open positions, it means that you are not filling the requirement, so please respond and let’s work together to find you a position.

Swim-A-Thon is coming up June 10 and I will be sending out an email this week asking people to volunteer to serve food and to help set up and clean up.

As always, we appreciate everything you do to help our kids have a fun and successful season!

Steiner Blue Meet - June 7 (Away)

Be sure to enter by noon Monday - June 2 using our OME system.

Our third meet is on the road, at Steiner Ranch. We need as many swimmers as possible to participate in the dual meets because each swimmer is important to the team.

Relays are chosen by the coaches and we try to have as many swimmers as possible participate. Please recognize that if a swimmers signs up for a meet and then does not participate on Saturday, it may result in our having to scratch that relay team from the meet.

Please arrive on time - 6:25. Late arrival could result in your swimmer being scratched from their relay.

Scratch: Once we close the meet online, email paul.wadehra@gmail.com, or text to 512-659-1373 if you have to scratch.

WBA Scholarships - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Did you know that the Wells Branch Armada offers college scholarships to up to three swimmers each year in that swim in their age-out year? To be eligible, swimmers must have swum on the team for 3 years, including their “age-out” season.

If you meet the above minimum requirements for consideration for these scholarships, be sure to check your family folder for information. Scholarship applications are due back by June 6, 2014.

We also need volunteers to serve on the scholarship committee. The scholarship documents state that a Board member or parent of a swimmer in their age-out year may not serve on the committee, which means everyone else can! To serve, you will need to be available to meet in mid-to-late June to make a decision and communicate to the Board prior to the awards ceremony.

Please contact Anne Bennett if you are interested in serving on the committee or have any other questions about the WBA scholarships.

25th Anniversary Swim-A-Thon - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our 25th Anniversary year Annual Swim-A-Thon will be held on Tuesday, June 10. This is our primary fundraiser, and the funds raised help us to keep our fees low and help us to purchase needed equipment.

Swimmers will soon receive a donation envelope in their family folder. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. As part of registration, each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

During the Swim-A-Thon, swimmers will be swimming laps and parents will bring chairs and sit pool side to count their swimmers' laps. Each team member will be entered in drawings for great door prizes- and there is one for everyone! We will also have special prizes you can purchase raffle tickets for, and free food and drinks for all family members!

Volunteers are also needed for Swim-A-Thon, to help with sign-in, running the sno-cone and popcorn machines, etc.

Pledge sheets are now in the family files, so start collecting pledges!

Please contact Nancy Brieger if you are able to volunteer.

Thank you, and look forward to seeing you there!

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies. Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas. The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Remember to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist Water or sports drinks
Checklist Blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist Nutritious snacks
Checklist Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist Sunblock
Checklist Goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!

Online Meet Entry (OME)

For every swim meet on our schedule, EVERY family MUST login to our website and register your swimmer for the meet. If your swimmer is not able to swim across the pool or you will be out-of-town and cannot participate, you should still login and and complete the form.

Please login to https://wellsbranch.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. You should see the name(s) of your swimmer(s) and the events for their age group(s).

You will be able to tell us if your swimmer(s) will not attend the meet or if they will not be available to swim either the early or the late relays for that meet.

We need each registered swimmer to fill out this form for each meet.
