Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

Hi Parents & Swimmers,

Great job against another very tough opponent in Anderson Mill this weekend. They were our second (and last) Division 1 opponent this year.

We had great time improvements - lots of those red, white and blue ribbons will be in folders this week. We also had new Invitational Qualifiers and 1st place winners.

Congratulations to Jacob Tolfa for breaking two records (see below). He broke a 25 year old record in the 25 freestyle and his own record in the 25 butterfly. Way to go Jake!

We are back at home meet this week - swimming against the Cedar Park Typhoons. Be sure to sign in by noon Monday and let us know if you are participating and your event and volunteer choices. Arrival time is 6:05 am See below in this newsletter for more details.

We are gearing up for our annual Swimathon fundraiser. Read more below.

See you at the pool!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Hi Armada Swimmers and Parents!  I was so proud of our team at our meet against Anderson Mill Saturday.  Not only did we have best times and broken records, we also had awesome attitudes and great sportsmanship.  The coaches noticed several swimmers doing their flip turns and open turns as well as great relay starts.  Swimmers, the time you put into practice last week really showed.

I also appreciated the patience with the relay mix ups.  Swimmers, with two official meets under our belt I'd like to remind you to please sign up for different events each week so that you can have a time, which helps with relay formation.  Parents and Swimmers, signing up for meets is a commitment.  Please note that in the future if there is a possibility that you will not stay for the end relays please mark that when you sign up for the meet.  It is always unfortunate when an entire relay team is scratched due to people leaving early.  I will always try my best to fix the relays in the case of unforeseen circumstances but I’d rather have your swimmer as an alternate if leaving is a possibility.

Our goals for practice this week are as follows:

  • Speed Work and Breath Control
  • Backstroke Stroke Counts and Finishes
  • Starts
  • Technical Parts of Breaststroke and Butterfly

It is going to be a great week!  Please remember that we transition from afternoon practices to morning practices on Wednesday.

Swim Hard!

Volunteer Spot

by Jeannie Boylan, VP and Volunteer Coordinator

Hi Parents!

Great meet yesterday! Exciting to see our swimmers doing so well!

I really appreciated how everyone pulled together to help set up the tents yesterday morning and again helped to break down and clean up the area. We have so many wonderful and helpful people on the team.

A few people have approached me regarding the fact that when they try to sign up for their volunteer positions, all of their preferences are full. Let me remind everyone that when you registered your child(ren) for the team, you chose three options as your preferences for volunteering. These are merely preferences and does not mean that, if they are filled, you are excused from volunteering. The team almost always has needs that you cannot see. That's why you have me to remind you that you haven't signed up to volunteer and provide you with some additional options that still are required to be filled in order to hold the meet. It's important for you to understand that, per the team bylaws (see the handbook), you are not exempt from volunteering simply because your preferences are filled by someone else. Positions are first-come-first-serve and flexibility is absolutely necessary.

Every week, I run a report that shows me all of the kids who are swimming in the meet, their parents, and what volunteer positions the parents are signed up for. I then send an email to the parents who have not been able to sign up for any volunteer position and let them know what positions still need to be filled. So, parents, if you receive a message from me asking for your help to fill positions beyond your preferences, please respond to me, because, again, ALL positions need to be filled.

Some parents and families actually step up and work much more than is required in order to help the team (THANK YOU). In all fairness, I'd really like to give those people a break.

As always, we appreciate everything you do to help our kids have a fun and successful season.

Cedar Park Meet (June 8) - Home

Be sure to enter by noon Monday - June 3 using our OME system.

Our third dual meet is back at home versus Cedar Park. Expect Cedar Park to bring fewer swimmers than we've seen the previous few weeks, but as always, we still need as many swimmers as possible to participate in the dual meets because each swimmer is important to the team.  Expect this meet to be over a bit earlier than the first two meets as well!

Relays are chosen by the coaches and we try to have as many swimmers as possible participate. Please recognize that if a swimmer signs up for a meet and then does not participate on Saturday, it may result in our having to scratch that swimmer's entire relay team from the meet.

Please arrive on time. Late arrival could result in your swimmer being scratched from their relay.

Scratch: Once we close the meet online, email paul.wadehra@gmail.com, or text to 512-659-1373 if you have to scratch.

Meet Set-up
Friday, June 7 at 8:00 pm
Meet setup will start at 8:00 pm for this meet. Please note that this is a change from the previous setup time of 6:30 pm, and is necessary due to the Willow Bend pool's summer open swim hours. As always, we must move all tables and chairs and put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.

The morning of the meet, we need help setting up pop-up tents around the pool. We appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.

Clean Up
We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. The more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.

Parking

At a home meet, Armada families park in the unpaved lot across the street from the pool, leaving the lot adjacent to the pool for our guest team. Please follow instructions from the parking attendants for everyone's safety. Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street.
Please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.

Swim-A-Thon - Party Time is 6:00-8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Our annual Swim-A-Thon & Silent Auction will be held from 6 to 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 18. This is our primary fundraiser and a huge party for our swimmers and families.

Swimmers will receive donation envelopes in their family folders this week. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. This fundraiser keeps us from having to raise registration prices significantly. Each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

During the Swim-A-Thon, swimmers will be swimming laps and parents will bring chairs and sit by the pool to count your swimmer's laps. Only team members are allowed in the pool. Each team member will be entered in drawings for great door prizes - and there is one for everyone!. We will also have special prizes you can purchase raffle tickets for.

We will offer free food and drinks for all family members. Sno-cones, popcorn, hot dogs and we usually are able to offer some "higher-end" food also. No charge for any of this!

Parents are encouraged to visit our Silent Auction tables. We have restaurant certificates, tickets to local attractions, and items donated by local businesses - great for gifts or just to treat yourself!

Practice Schedule - Switching to Morning Practices Mid-Week

Please note that morning practices begin mid-week.  The first day of morning practices is Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

As with our afternoon practices, we may make changes to this schedule after practice starts if we have too many swimmers in the pool at one time. Our goal is to make each practice as even as possible so the swimmers have the best experience possible.

If you have any questions please contact Marcynda Verdicchio.

Practice Schedule: May 6 - June 4 -- Monday-Friday

Practice 1: Ages 7-8 4:30 - 5:15 PM
Practice 2: Ages 6 and Under 5:15 - 6:00 PM
Practice 3: Ages 9-11 6:00 - 7:00 PM
Practice 4: Ages 12 & Up 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Practice Schedule: June 5 - July 5 -- Monday-Friday

Practice 1: Ages 12 & Up 7:15 - 8:45 AM
Practice 2: Ages 6 and Under 8:45 - 9:30 AM
Practice 3: Ages 7-8 9:30 - 10:30 AM
Practice 4: Ages 9-11 10:30 - 11:30 AM
Rain/Bad Weather:
In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as, fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies.Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist water or sport's drinks
Checklist blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist nutritious snacks
Checklist warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist sunblock
Checklist goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!
