Captain's Corner

by Peter Mielcarek, President

Greetings Armada Families! I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! Our first dual meet of the season was a huge success! The weather held steady for us this week, and not only were we able to complete the entire meet, but we finished about 45 minutes earlier than expected. Thank you to all of you that attended the meet and for working hard to make sure the meet stayed on track.

Please continue to check your kiddos bags for any extra items they might have accidentally picked up from the pits. Any extra items you might have acquired can be returned to the red Armada lost & found bin that we keep by the family file boxes, or turned into a board member at the pool. For those of you that are missing items, please regularly check the Armada lost & found bin as your items could turn up at any point.

This week’s meet is our first tri-meet of the season and we will be swimming against the Stingrays & the Tidal Waves. As a reminder, morning practices will start this Friday June 2nd ! Please check the website for the morning practice times. See y’all at the pool this week!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

"Excellence is not being the best; it is doing your best."
At the coaches meeting after our meet Saturday we agreed that despite the final score our swimmers showed an amazing winning spirit in each event. Our times reflected that with 50% being time improvements. The meet also is a great evaluation time for us to see where we need to focus our efforts in practice. I've included two video links below for the freestyle flip turn technique and butterfly stroke, two skills we will be working on this week. You may find it helpful to watch with your swimmer before coming to practice so they are familiar with the skill and terminology.
A quick note about swim meet entries. The first part of the meet entry process is done by you when you mark your swimmer as attending and choose the individual events they want to swim (up to 3). After the meet is closed I start evaluating each age group and checking the following: swimmers are entered into events they are ready for and swimmers are spread evenly across the events. I also look at swimmers who have selected only one or two events and I will select another that I feel they are ready for. Last part of entries are the relays. Relays are not something you sign up for but, if you are swimming in the meet you should plan on participating in a relay. Please feel free to ask my any questions you may have. Thanks for your continued support! Have a great week!

Parking

Friendly reminder for our new families, for home meets, the parking lot adjacent to our pool is for our guest team. Additional parking will be along Sauls and Crissom next to the pool and the elementary school, and on the street on Long Vista. Please do NOT park along Bratton or in any of the parking lots for businesses you see along Bratton and Long Vista, as you will risk being towed. There will be overflow parking at the Rec Center on Shoreline Dr., but it is a small hike from there to the pool.

Please allow extra time to find a place to park and potentially walk a fair distance to the pool. You may also wish to drop swimmers off and then go find parking.

WBA Scholarships

Scholarship applications will be distributed shortly to all eligible recipients.

We need volunteers to serve on the scholarship committee. The scholarship documents state that a Board member or parent of a swimmer in their age-out year may not serve on the committee, which means everyone else can! To serve, you will need to be available to meet in late June to make a decision and communicate to the Board prior to the awards ceremony.

Please contact Brenda Pinkston if you are interested in serving on the committee or have any other questions about the WBA scholarships.
