Captain's Log

by Paul Wadehra, Meet Director

I hope everyone enjoyed our first dual meet with Pflugerville. We had a bit of rain but nothing like our first dual meet from last year, thankfully!

Next week we go on the road to visit the Forest North Stingrays (map and directions coming soon). Arrival time is 6:30 at their pool. Swimming at a different venue is a good experience if you haven't done it before, and a great deal of fun. We need a full turnout for this meet (as we do for all meets) so let's show our Armada team spirit.

In this issue of the newsletter, in addition to the Gold Medal (first place) Winners, we will start showing Invitational Meet Qualifiers, Fast Fishy (largest time improvement) winners, and team record breakers, so be sure and look for your name in those sections!

Coach's Corner

by Gina Zayas, Head Coach

Wow! Our first meet of the season was an awesome example of the swimmers' hard work at practice.  As I have mentioned before, time improvement is our top goal of the season. Our meet against Pflugerville resulted in 215 time improvements!! That is 49% of all the times taken this weekend! Way to go swimmers!

There are two ways the swimmers are recognized for time improvements. One is by the time improvement ribbons, which are given to a swimmer for each time they improve in any of their events. The second is with the Fast Fishy award. Each week there will be a boy and girl from each age group who will be given a Fast Fishy cap for dropping the most time at the meet. Those awards will begin this week. ☺ Please note that both time improvement ribbons and Fast Fishy awards are based on current year times only.

Of course we also saw areas where our team needs improvement and the coaches will have a plan to work on those areas to make them stronger as we get ready to swim the Stingrays this weekend. Here is a list of our goals for this week:

  • Improve our Breaststroke and Practice Pull-outs
  • Practice Backstroke Stroke Counts (how many strokes from the wall into the flags) and turns
  • Learn/Practice Open turns and Flip turns
  • Improve Starts and Finishes
  • Sprinting (What does it mean to sprint?)
  • Proper Way to Wear Goggles

One of my responsibilities each week is meet entries. When you and your swimmer fill out the meet attendance for we ask that you choose three individual events. You are guaranteed two out of the three that you choose. It is my responsibility to our team to make sure we are balanced in all events. This means that sometimes one of the swimmer’s events will be changed. If there are events that your swimmer really wants to swim please let me know that. I will do my best to notify the swimmer at practice or through email about the event switch.

It is going to be a great week! Enjoy your Memorial Day and I look forward to seeing you all this week!

Volunteer Spot

by Nancy Brieger, Volunteer Coordinator

Thank you to everyone who volunteered for a great first dual meet!

A couple of reminders for next Saturday:

  • Please check in with me when you arrive at the meet at the volunteer table, even you are a second half volunteer.
  • Also, please turn in your name tag at the end of the meet. This saves time, money and the earth when you allow me to use your name tag again. If you took it home with you at the last meet, you can return it to my family folder or my folder in the Coaches and Board Member box this week.

We still have some positions to fill for the Forest North meet for this Saturday, so if you have not signed up for a position yet, even if the system says all positions are filled because your preferences are filled, you still need to email me to be assigned to a position. Thank you so much for your help on this and for all that everyone is doing to make the meets run well for our children.

Forest North Meet - May 31 (Away)

Be sure to enter by noon Monday - May 26 using our OME system.

Our second meet is on the road, at Forest North. We need as many swimmers as possible to participate in the dual meets because each swimmer is important to the team.

It is extremely important for new swimmers to experience swimming in a different pool with a different atmosphere. This is valuable experience and a lot of fun.

Relays are chosen by the coaches and we try to have as many swimmers as possible participate. Please recognize that if a swimmers signs up for a meet and then does not participate on Saturday, it may result in our having to scratch that relay team from the meet.

Please arrive on time. Late arrival could result in your swimmer being scratched from their relay.

Scratch: Once we close the meet online, email paul.wadehra@gmail.com, or text to 512-659-1373 if you have to scratch.

We ask everyone to clean up the pit area, take down tents, fold tarps and help us pack them in the transportation trucks. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is clean.

The visiting team’s setup area is located outside the gate on the grassy area to the left of the pool.

Please park in the elementary school parking lot across the street from the swimming pool. Please do not park on the bridge, in front of mailboxes, in front of driveways, or in the church parking lot.

WBA Scholarships

Did you know that the Wells Branch Armada offers college scholarships to up to three swimmers each year in that swim in their age-out year? To be eligible, swimmers must have swum on the team for 3 years, including their “age-out” season.

If you meet the above minimum requirements for consideration for these scholarships, be sure to check your family folder for information. Scholarship applications are due back by June 6, 2014.

We also need volunteers to serve on the scholarship committee. The scholarship documents state that a Board member or parent of a swimmer in their age-out year may not serve on the committee, which means everyone else can! To serve, you will need to be available to meet in mid-to-late June to make a decision and communicate to the Board prior to the awards ceremony.

Please contact Anne Bennett at bennean7@gmail.com if you are interested in serving on the committee or have any other questions about the WBA scholarships.

Raffle Donations Needed

Our 25th Annual Swim-A-Thon will be held on Tuesday, June 10. This is our primary fundraiser, and the funds raised help us to keep our fees low. The funds also help us to purchase needed equipment.

Additionally, beginning at Swim-A-Thon and continuing throughout the season, we will be raffling off a number of items. Donations are needed for the raffle. We are asking for donations of goods, services, or gift certificates/cards that could be raffled.  We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.

Please contact Lisa Tolfa 512.970.0161 or email me at tolfafamily@yahoo.com with any questions or contributions.

25th Anniversary Swim-A-Thon!

Our 25th Anniversary year Annual Swim-A-Thon will be held on Tuesday, June 10. This is our primary fundraiser, and the funds raised help us to keep our fees low and help us to purchase needed equipment.

Swimmers will soon receive a donation envelope in their family folder.  We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations.  As part of registration, each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

During the Swim-A-Thon, swimmers will be swimming laps and parents will bring chairs and sit pool side to count their swimmers' laps.  Each team member will be entered in drawings for great door prizes- and there is one for everyone!  We will also have special prizes you can purchase raffle tickets for, and free food and drinks for all family members!

Volunteers are also needed for Swim-A-Thon, to help with sign-in, running the sno-cone and popcorn machines, etc.

Watch your family file for more information and pledge sheets.

Please contact Nancy Brieger if you are able to help out.

Thank you, and look forward to seeing you there!

Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:
tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks, etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies. Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas. The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Remember to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!

Checklist:

Checklist 2 towels Checklist Water or sports drinks
Checklist Blanket to sit on in pit area Checklist Nutritious snacks
Checklist Warm clothes for after warm-up in early a.m. Checklist Quiet activities to keep them occupied in the pit area between races
Checklist Swim cap Checklist Sunblock
Checklist Goggles Checklist Parents: Bring a chair, wear a hat, apply sunblock!

Online Meet Entry (OME)

For every swim meet on our schedule, EVERY family MUST login to our website and register your swimmer for the meet. If your swimmer is not able to swim across the pool or you will be out-of-town and cannot participate, you should still login and and complete the form.

Please login to https://wellsbranch.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. You should see the name(s) of your swimmer(s) and the events for their age group(s).

You will be able to tell us if your swimmer(s) will not attend the meet or if they will not be available to swim either the early or the late relays for that meet.

We need each registered swimmer to fill out this form for each meet.
