Hello Armada Families!
Daily afternoon practices start Monday, May 5. The practice times for each age group are posted on the website under the schedule tab. Your swimmer(s) will practice according to their age as of May 1. Swimmers aged 7-8 will practice from 4:30-5:15 pm. Our 6 & Under swimmers will come after them from 5:15-6:00 pm. We will have 9-11 year olds swimming from 6:00-7:00 pm. The evening will finish with swimmers aged 12 and up practicing from 7:00-8:30 pm. Swimmers must attend their assigned practice time. If you have questions or conflicts, please contact Coach Gina.
The first meet is the Red, White, and Blue practice meet which will be on May 17. The full meet schedule is under the Schedule tab.
Important information and events will be communicated in several ways:
- Email - We will send emails to the addresses that you specified when you registered. You may go back online and change or add addresses if you wish.
- Newsletters - We will send weekly newsletters via email, starting with this one. These contain important information concerning meets, practices, and other events.
- Family folders - There are three file folder boxes at the pool containing folders for each family. Check your folder at the pool daily. It will have meet ribbons and forms or other information for you that can't be done via email.

and it contains a lot of useful information. Spend some time going through it and you will have a great overview of the team and the season.

Welcome parents and swimmers to the 2014 season of the Wells Branch Armada. I am so excited about this season! All of our coaching staff this year has been a part of the Armada team at some point in their swimming career. I recommend checking out their bios on our team home page.
We have a number of new families joining us this season which means new friendships and lots of fun. I hope to see everyone at some of our events outside the regular practice and meet schedule, such as Swim-A-Thon, Round Rock Express Night and 4th of July!
Parents, as we kick off this season on Monday I’d like you to keep a few things in mind:
- The first 3-4 days will appear very chaotic…this is normal.
- With so many new faces for the coaches and the swimmers, a lot of time will be spent getting the swimmers into the lane that best fits them according to their ability.
- Our coaches are finishing up their school year as well and may not be at practice on a daily basis for a few weeks. Therefore, your child may have a different coach some days. This is a positive since we all know that kids learn differently and we are fortunate to have coaches with different swimming backgrounds and coaching techniques. Please feel free to ask me before or after practice if you have a concern about anything having to do with what lane your swimmer is in.
- I am happy to answer questions and address any concerns you have. It would be best to speak with me either before or after practice, through email or a written note left in the coach’s folder.
- May is a very busy time and the coaches totally understand that many of you have other commitments during the week. Three practices a week is recommended, but please feel free to speak with me if you have a concern about this.

Your First Day of Practice
We will be distributing t-shirts and swim caps the first week of practice. Swim caps will be given to all girls. Boys are given caps upon request. Boys with longer hair should wear a cap to keep the hair out of their eyes.
The family file boxes are located under the front covered area on the shelf by the kiddie pool. Please check your folder frequently for team communications.
Remember to bring water, sun block, towels, and a well-fitted pair of goggles.
Please remember that many of the swimmers haven't been in the pool for 9 months. It will take them awhile to regain technique and stamina. Be positive and encouraging.
If you ordered Armada or 25th Anniversary iron-on bling and have not received it, please find Anne Bennett at the pool or contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org to make arrangements to pick it up. Personalized caps will not be in until next week; if you ordered one, you will be notified when they are available for pick-up.
There will be board members around the pool the first week wearing badges. Feel free to ask them questions. During meets, you can identify board members by their red t-shirts.
When it is time for your practice, the coaches will call the swimmers to the pool. Prior to this, try to have your child to the restroom, showered, and wearing cap and goggles, if applicable. The MUD has asked that each swimmer shower off before entering the pool for health reasons, so please help us comply with that request.
The coaches will be trying to learn names and determine swimming ability the first week. The 6 and under swimmers will be spending a lot of time sitting on the side of the pool while the coaches work one-on-one with them. If it is chilly, they can have a towel wrapped around them.
Please don't read too much into the lane assignments. We will be grouping the swimmers so we can work with them most effectively. They may be changing lanes throughout the season.
The kiddie pool will be open but you MUST follow the MUD rules posted. The kiddie pool is for children 5 and under, and a parent must be inside the fence with their child. Failure to follow the posted rules will result in the kiddie pool being closed during practices.

Saturday, May 17th is our Red, White & Blue practice meet. For each meet, remember to sign up for a volunteer position when you fill out the Online Meet Entry form (OME). If you are not able to choose a position, please email me so I can assign you as necessary.
Remember, ALL positions need to be filled in order for a meet to run smoothly. It takes between 70-80 volunteers per team per meet and we need everyone to pitch in to make the meets a success for our children.

We may make changes to this schedule after practice starts if we have too many swimmers in the pool at one time. Our goal is to make each practice as even as possible so the swimmers have the best experience possible.

** Please note that swimmers qualifying for and swimming in the invitational meet will practice the week of July 14-18. Practice times for this week will be communicated at a later date.
In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.
Three large file boxes with a folder for each Armada family will be set out at each practice. These folders are a tool for team communications, so check your folder often. You will get notices, forms, and meet ribbons via your folder. If your folder is missing or a name is mis-typed, please let us know and we'll get it corrected. Note - please tell swimmers to dry their hands before checking the box.
Online Meet Entry - OME
For every swim meet on our schedule, EVERY family MUST login to our website and register your swimmer for the meet. If your swimmer is not able to swim across the pool or you will be out-of-town and cannot participate, you should still login and and complete the form.
Your family has a Swim-Topia account - your email plus a password you created. If you do not have this information, please email Marcynda Verdicchio and you will be sent a link that you can click on to set up your password.

You should see the name(s) of your swimmer(s) and the events for their age group(s).
For the RWB meet, you choose all four events shown - unless your swimmer has not mastered one or more of the strokes yet. Then, please just click on freestyle and any other strokes your swimmer can swim.
You will be able to tell us if your swimmer(s) will not attend the meet or if they will not be available to swim either the early or the late relays for that meet.
We need each registered swimmer to fill out this form for each meet.
Red, White, & Blue Practice Meet - May 17
This meet will be a "shortened" version of a regular dual meet. Meet sign-up will opened soon. Once you receive notice that this meet is open, please login to https://wellsbranch.swimtopia.com/swim_meets and register your swimmer(s) for events and a parent for a volunteer job.
Entry deadline is by 9 pm on Monday, May 12.
We will start by having every swimmer who is able participate in the freestyle relays. Following the relays, each swimmer will have the opportunity to swim all four strokes -- freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimmers who have not learned a stroke yet will not have to swim it.
This will give all participating swimmers seed times to use the following week when we put together the relays and will also help us get them seeded correctly in events.
Younger swimmers will be allowed to have kickboards and coaches in the water at this meet if needed.
We should be finished before noon.
The purpose of this practice meet is to get swimmers and volunteers comfortable in the way a swim meet works, specific responsibilities, and where everyone should be when. If you have questions, please ask. Board members and experienced parents will be on hand to help with questions and training.
Friday, May 16 at 6:30 pm
Meet setup will start at 6:30 pm for this meet. We must move all tables and chairs and put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.
The morning of the meet, we need help setting up pop-up tents around the pool. We appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.
We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. The more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.
At a home meet, Armada families normally park in the unpaved lot across the street from the pool, leaving the lot adjacent to the pool for our guest team. Since this practice meet involves only Armada families, there are no such restrictions.
However, please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.
Did you know that the Wells Branch Armada offers college scholarships to up to three swimmers each year in that swim in their age-out year? To be eligible, swimmers must have swum on the team for 3 years, including their “age-out” season.
If you meet the above minimum requirements for consideration for these scholarships, be sure to check your family folder for information, which we will be getting out to you by mid-May at the latest. Scholarship applications will be due back by May 30, 2014.
We also need volunteers to serve on the scholarship committee. The scholarship documents state that a Board member or parent of a swimmer in their age-out year may not serve on the committee, which means everyone else can! To serve, you will need to be available to meet in mid-late June to make a decision and communicate to the Board prior to the awards ceremony.

The Swim Shop will be open from 5 - 7 pm Monday - Thursday the first week of practice. We will set up on the elevated grassy area. Sorry, we don't take credit/debit cards.
